Where the Wild Things Are

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are all having a great Holiday season!  I have been relaxing and spending time with family the past few days, and it is really nice to have a break from school.

Last week I finished my workshop at the Animation Collaborative.  I was taking a class with the master Dice Tsutsumi!  I have admired his work for a long time and was excited when I was accepted into his class.  He gave me and 8 other students a crash course on light and color design in film.  Our assignment was to create a color script for Maurice Sendak's beloved children story Where the Wild Things Are.

The first image is an example of how Dice would approach a color script at Pixar.  It is a chart that tracks the emotional highs and lows of the story.  We started with the 5 most important panels, and slowly filled in the in-between's.

Here are each of the individual paintings.  Some aren't as finished as others, but hopefully they are clear enough to convey my lighting idea.

And here are some of the supplemental vis dev I create the paintings.

Here are links to my classmates blogs/websites.  They also did some incredible work with this project, and are all amazing artists!

I could not find these guys blogs but they are great too!

Light at the end of the tunnel!

The fall semester is almost over, I can't believe how fast time goes by!  Here are a few concept pieces I've done for class.  This is going to be a short film project,  hopefully we will jump into production next semester.

Painting studies

Here are some of the most successful studies I've done over the past few weeks.  These exercises are definitely improving my painting - there is so much to be learned from observational painting that I feel like it is something we need to do on a daily basis.

Back from CTN!

CTN was such an incredible experience.  I was fortunate enough to be picked to showcase my work at the Disney Sponsored table!   It was such an amazing opportunity to meet new people, and to share my work with the rest of the convention.

I have made a lot of new friends, and have met such incredible artists!  There is so much talent out there - I am really lucky to be a part of this community.   It feels really great to see the hard work pay off.  I want to thank everyone who stopped by to say hello, and all of my friends who helped me organize my table!

I always leave the convention feeling inspired, and ready to work!  See you next year!

Some Stuff

I am currently taking a class at Animation Collaborative with the master Dice Tsutsumi.  It's an incredibly humbling experience, and I'm really fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from one of the best!

One of the weekly painting exercises Dice assigns us.  This was painted over a layout drawing from Spirited Away.

We are just getting into the main project for the course, which is to create a color script for Where the Wild Things Are.

First Senior Project!

Hey Everyone,

We just wrapped our first assignment in the BFA class.  The project was to develop concept work for a video game about Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla.   We were lucky enough to have the amazingly talented Dela Longfish, and Jeff Sengali direct our first assignment.  It was a great opportunity to learn from these guys, and get their feedback on our work.

I recently updated my website with the rest of the artwork; so check it out if you are interested!

Haven't updated in a while!

Hey everyone,

I have been really busy the past few weeks, and have unfortunately neglected my blog haha.  I'm feeling a little burnt out, but I also think that I'm slowly improving as an artist - at least I hope so.

Here are a few studies that I've done the past few days.  The last painting is from a Spirited Away layout, which was done as a painting exercise.

Brandon's Goal

Hey everyone,

I just wrapped a short 30sec commercial for the Brandon's Goal Foundation.  It's going to be playing this month for children's cancer awareness month.  I don't know if it will be on TV, or just the local channels the foundation is based in (seattle) but here is some of the artwork I produced for the short.

I'm still waiting to hear back from the foundation, but I might be able to post the commercial on my website, so keep an eye out!

The Buffalo Gang is Back

I'm currently going over and revising my portfolio, and I decided to come back to this piece to finish it.  I posted it a while back and haven't touched it since.  I'll probably come back to this again and fix some things, but for now I'm going to move on.

New Website!

Hey guys,  I recently started using squarespace to host my portfolio.  You can check it out at Wendelldalit.com or by clicking my portfolio tab up top.   I've put some work on it already, but I'm still in the process of going through my work and putting it online.

I'll still continue updating this blog with sketches, but most of my finished work will be on my website.

Re-design

Last week my friends and I had a story meeting about the short film I'm trying to direct this year.  After months of working and re-working story, I think we've finally gotten to a point where we are all satisfied with what we have.  The story has changed so much from the original idea, that I think I have to go back and re-design the character.  I don't think the original design was bad.. I just don't think it fits the needs of the character.  I'm starting to explore different ideas, and hopefully I can come up with with a stronger design.

Here is one of the thumbnails I'm considering.

Also, Here is a sketch of my friend Kayla Rimes.

Taking a Break

I've been really busy the past couple of weeks producing a short 30 second commercial with a small group of students at SJSU.  I took a quick 20 minute break to paint one of the animators in the group working like a maniac.

Concept for a Short film Project

Here is an abandoned concept painting I did for a short film that some friends and I are making.  We are trying to go back and really nail down the story before we move forward.
